Curator’s Insight
NYC is the concrete jungle I’ve been exploring since I was knee-high and a Boston kid. Annual getaways, Christmas lights, and New York City’s pulse became my tradition. Yet, after countless visits to the tourist hotspots, I discovered the real charm lies beyond the beaten path. Buckle up for a different NYC – one filled with hidden gems waiting to be explored.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures
1. Smart Sightseeing: If the staples beckon, do it right: Time Square at night is magic, The Met offers Friday & Saturday evening delights at the Great Hall Balcony Bar, and early birds catch Ellis Island & Lady Liberty with fewer crowds.
2. Top of the Rock Magic: Ditch the Empire State Building; the Rockefeller Center’s viewing platform is less crowded and serves a knockout view. Don’t forget to explore the Secret Gardens hidden in plain sight!
3. Museum Marvels: Beyond the Met & Guggenheim, explore offbeat gems like the Met Cloisters, American Museum of Natural History, National Museum of the American Indian, Tenement Museum, and El Museo del Barrio for diverse experiences.
4. NYC on Foot: Walk the city like a local with Sandemans New Europe’s tip-based walking tours – saving cash while getting your daily steps.
5. The High Line: An elevated train track turned park with art and stunning views. For a quieter alternative, soar to the Elevated Acre – a park in the sky.
6. Market Mania: NYC’s soul lies in its markets. Check out Market 57 at Pier 57, Chelsea Market for vintage treasures, Essex Street Market for historical vibes, and others like Grand Bazaar, Little Market NYC, and URBANSPACE Food Hall.
7. Williamsburg Wonderland: Head to Brooklyn’s hipster haven – Williamsburg. Marvel at Manhattan views, chic shops, trendy cafes, and a lively nightlife scene.
8. City’s Hidden Secrets: Discover the Whispering Gallery at Grand Central Station, Green-Wood Cemetery, Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, a piece of the Berlin Wall, the Old City Hall Subway Stop, the Stonewall Inn, and the Little Red Lighthouse.
Eateries and Sips
1. The Skylark: Sip cocktails with appetizers and views, especially of the Empire State Building.
2. Double Chicken Please: A refined lounge called the Coop awaits at one of the World’s 50 Best bars.
3. Los Tacos No. 1: Authentic Mexican taste brought to Manhattan by three best friends.
4. Beauty & Essex: A chain delivering consistently tasty food, worth every bite.
5. Gaonnuri: Dive into delicious Korean food with city views at this Koreatown staple.
