The White Lotus Effect
HBO’s The White Lotus has been a juggernaut for three seasons running. Not just for television ratings and awards, but for wanderlust. It inspired everyone to travel to the destinations featured.
The first season saw tourism skyrocket to Hawaii. It was filmed at the Four Seasons Resort Maui. The Four Seasons commitment to excellence was on full display. Right on the ocean, its spacious suites showcased the epitome of Hawaiian elegance.
Sicily became the location for season two. Once again, tourism flourished. San Domenico Palace in Taormina was the star. Another Four Seasons property, it again showed off gorgeous suites and sweeping ocean views.
Season three now puts Thailand, more specifically Ko Samui, front and center. But rather than being filmed at one resort, it was filmed at four. The reason was to specifically accommodate the script and production requirements.
Season 3 Filming Locations
According to David Bernad, the show’s executive producer, they used specific parts of several resorts. In fact, they used some of the best resorts in Thailand. The result is an illusion of a grander cliffside resort we wish was real.
The Four Seasons Koh Samui: This was the main property used. You’ll see its grand, tropical chic pool villas prominently showcased. Its restaurant was also used for the show’s breakfast scenes. Fitness and outdoor areas are also on display.
Anantara Bophut Koh Samui: This hotel’s lobby, security station, main drive, and jewelry store make up part of the show’s resort.
Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort: The Singing Bird Lounge was used for many of the outdoor bar scenes.
Rosewood Phuket: Dinner scenes were shot at their on-site restaurant, Ta Khai.
Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas: The reception was a much bigger space and easier for filming. The show also features this spa as the show’s fictional resort spa.
Other hotels and resorts featured include the Am Samui Resort Taling Ngam and the Cape Fahn Hotel (on its own private island). Be on the lookout for the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok to also make an appearance later in the season.
